The Westland Historical Commission (WHC) consists of 9 volunteers appointed by the Mayor of Westland for 5 years terms that can be extended. We currently have 3 open positions and strongly encourage anyone with an interest in volunteering, to give back to the community by assisting in the operation of the Westland Historic Village Park and the maintenance of accessions.  We meet one evening a month and rotate Saturday afternoons conducting tours and minimal WHVP maintenance.  Stop by when we are opened or contact us by clicking here.

                                                                                  VISION
The vision of the Westland Historic Village Park is to inspire a sense of place and history for Westland and Nankin Township by collecting, studying, interpreting and presenting the city's natural and cultural heritage. This includes the museum's core areas of collecting: the history of the City of Westland and Nankin Township; and further includes the history of Wayne County General Hospital (otherwise known as Eloise), the Norwayne Historic District and the pioneers of our area. The museum's focus further includes, but is not limited to: Family History, Minority Histories, and Environmental History.
                                                                                                                        Adopted February 27th, 2018.

                                                               COLLECTION'S POLICY
Thank you for your interest in preserving the history of  Westland. The WHC appreciates all artifacts donated. Please review the following accession requirements and policies.  Click here for more details.

For the purpose of donating an artifact, the owner of a given artifact or artifacts must comply with the following procedures:
  • No artifact will be accepted before a written statement of intent to donate is submitted to the WHC whether in person or through mail.  Updated contact information must be provided so as to allow the commission to contact the donor if necessary.
  • The written statement must include the name and description of the artifact being donated, a model name and/or number, the manufacturer's name and/or number, a photograph of the actual artifact and a statement citing why the donor chooses to donate the artifact to the WHC.
  • Once the above information is submitted, the WHC will research the artifact(s) to determine if the artifact should be considered for acceptance.  Once per month, the Commissioners meet. At this time the accession will be voted upon for acceptance or rejection.
  • If an artifact is accepted, the object becomes the property of the WHC. The WHC will determine how, when and if the artifact will be displayed or inventoried. The WHC reserves the right to dispose of the artifact.
  • Any donated item cannot be reclaimed by the donor or their heirs/estate.
  • If the artifact is to be deaccessioned, the WHC will attempt to contact the original donor.

Adopted July 2009.
